The iconic MINI is South Africa’s favourite urban compact car, according to search data by online motor marketplace, AutoTrader.
According to AutoTrader CEO George Mienie, no other vehicle comes close to the popularity of the MINI.
“I’m not surprised. MINI is the most iconic British car of all time, its retro styling and magnificent road manners have seen the car attract millions of fans the world over,” he said.
The top 10 list of most searched for ‘small family’ or ‘city cars’ includes Hyundai’s i10 in second place, and Kia Picanto third, followed by the Fiat 500 in fourth, the VW Up! in fifth, and the electric BMW i3 in sixth position.
The Suzuki Swift, a 2019 AutoTrader SA Car of the Year finalist is on the list as the seventh most popular urban compact car, followed by the Smart. Yet another 2019 AutoTrader SA Car of the Year finalist, the Nissan Micra, clocks in at ninth, while the Toyota Aygo rounds out the top 10.
Mienie said that that urban compact cars represent the most significant sector of the motor industry.
“Thanks to the popularity of sports utility vehicles (SUVs), the small car market dropped from 32% to 31% of the total car market in South Africa in 2018. However this segment is still by far the largest.”
