South Africa’s best-loved bakkies compared: price and power

Bakkie sales in South Africa continued to show resilience in what was a turbulent year in 2020, accounting for three of the top five top vehicle name plates sold overall, led by Toyota Hilux, with Ford Ranger in third,  and Isuzu D-Max fifth.

At 31,263 units, the Hilux sold nearly 12,000 more units than the VW Polo Vivo (19,750) in second place. Ford Ranger, with 18,846 units was third, and the VW Polo (16,335), was fourth, followed by the Isuzu D-Max, with 12,704 units sold over the course of the year.

And rivers can expect a number of new models in the country in 2021 including fresh looks from all three leading brands, while a new Mazda BT-50 is expected soon, as is a Nissan Navara facelift. Three totally new French-made nameplates are expected in South Africa in 2021: one from Peugeot, the LandTrek, and two from Renault, the Duster Oroch and Alaskan.

Citing data from Lightstone Auto, Car.co.za noted that the Toyota Hilux is leading the double-cab pack after the first month of 2021, with 1,290 units registered. The Ford Ranger is close behind in second place with 1,161 units. The Isuzu D-Max is third after January 2021, with 425 double-cab units sold.

Interestingly, the single-cab race is also led by the Hilux (907), which is some way ahead of the D-Max (438), Mahindra Pik Up (259) and Ranger (192).
