A look at the new R200,000 Renault SUV

French carmaker Renault has launched its latest compact SUV – the Kiger – in South Africa, starting at R200,000.

“Kiger has an SUV coupé look, but its long wheelbase promises great habitability and volume on board. Its ‘smart cabin’ has been specially designed to encourage sharing and conviviality,” said the head of group design, Laurens Van Den Acker.

The Renault Kiger’s cabin is intuitive, boasting features normally reserved for upper segments, such as an 8-inch floating touchscreen, wireless smartphone replication, reverse camera, handsfree smart access, ambient lighting, a multi-sense driving mode experience and a 3D ‘surround sound’ ARKAMYS sound system, Renault said.

“It’s generously roomy and ultra-modern with segment-leading storage thanks to a multitude of clever cabin storage compartments throughout totalling 29 L and a best-in-class 405 L boot space, it said.

The body structure of the Renault Kiger is reinforced to meet 3-star GLOBAL NCAP conditions – with safety features including ABS + EBD, 4 Airbags, ISO-FIX,  and rear parking sensors.

Renault said that the higher ground clearance (205mm) and functional roof bars heighten the vehicle’s shape and complete its bold SUV look. The carmaker said that the higher trim levels boast 16-inch black diamond-cut alloys that enhance the sporty and stylish look of the all-new Renault Kiger.

The new Renault Kiger comes in six body colours – Cool White; Planet Grey; Moonlight Grey; Mahogany Brown Caspian Blue and Radiant Red.

The Kiger is fitted with 2 engine variants: An aspirated 1.0 L engine with an output of 52kW and 96Nm of torque and a three-cylinder turbocharged 1.0 L petrol engine with a power output of 74kW and 160 Nm of torque on the Manual.

“This engine offers the latest technological innovations and delivers impressive combined fuel consumption from only 5 litres/100km,” the group said.

The 1.0 L naturally aspirated engine is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox or the EASY-R five-speed AMT gearbox, which provides the comfort of clutchless driving at affordable pricing. It features a manual mode that allows the driver to drive either in fully automatic or sequential mode.

“It ensures efficient engine starting, safe car-overtaking manoeuvres and the best possible driving pleasure. Renault said that the turbo engine delivers an outstanding power-to-weight ratio and the best torque-to-weight ratio in the compact SUV segment,” Renault said.

The 1.0 L turbo energy engine is either mated with a five-speed manual gearbox or an X-Tronic CVT gearbox.

As is the case across Renault’s entire product range, the new Renault Kiger comes standard with a 5-year/150,000km mechanical warranty and a 6-year anticorrosion warranty, with service intervals at 15,000km.
