The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) will launch two new Driving Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) in Gauteng this week, which will offer extended operating hours.
The corporation said that the new licensing centres in Waterfall Park in Midrand, and Eco Park in Centurion, will open their doors on Thursday (7 October).
The DLTCs will allow the public to renew driving licences, professional driving permits and conversion of foreign driving licences.
In addition to being open seven days a week, the DLTCs will also offer expanded operating hours between 07h00 and 21h00, the RTMC said.
It said that the new licensing centres are aimed at helping to alleviate the public’s frustration with the renewal of driving licences. “The initiative is part of efforts to improve efficiency and reduce the backlog in expired licences caused by the imposition of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.
“The centres will usher in a new era of digitalisation in the traffic management sector where long queues will be eliminated,” it said.

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport also launched a new web-based license renewal booking system in September, which aims to address backlogs and allow cardholders to request a slot at their convenience.
“Previously, a notice on slot availability was sent to those cardholders whose licenses were soon to expire without them asking for it. Now the onus is on cardholders to take the initiative and make the request,” it said.
Gauteng transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo said applicants would be allocated slots within 30 days upon receipt of the full information required by the department.
Drivers looking to renew their licence will have to email one of two addresses with a request to book a slot, and they will receive a response with the required information.
This information will be used to prioritise drivers whose licence cards have expired during the Covid-19 lockdown period or earlier, Mamabolo said.
Requests for a slot can be made at the following email addresses:
