 ·4 Aug 2022

New data from the classifieds website AutoTrader shows a growing interest among South Africans in the purchase of second-hand electric vehicles (EVs).

George Mienie, the chief executive officer of AutoTrader, said that the report points to an increased propensity of fuel-related searches and increased traction for electric vehicle (EV) production and adoption in the country.

In 2022, EVs were listed 141 times, registering an average price of R1,870,721, mileage of 21,313km and an average year Model of 2020.

The Audi RS E-Tron GT was the top searched and top viewed electric vehicle, having launched in the country in February.

The most available Models were the BMW i3, Porsche Taycan and the Audi E-Tron. The small hatchback has been on the market since 2015, and will be discontinued soon.

At the time of producing this report, there were 10 “new car” EV models available for sale on dealership floors.

In 2020, AutoTrader said that 92 EVs were sold. This increased to 218 EV sales in 2021. AutoTrader said it took the decision in mid-2021 to move away from only reporting on EV searches and advert views when consumers select the electric fuel-type function and instead provide holistic data on search and advert view metrics to reflect more of how South Africa is receiving EVs.

The most-listed EV was the BMW i3, the company’s first commercial fully-electric offering. It is also South Africa’s best-selling electric car.

The table below summarises the details of the top 10 most listed EVs on AutoTrader for the first six months in 2022, including their average prices, mileage, and most common model year.
