Top 10 best-selling cars in South Africa right now – with pricing
New data from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) shows that South Africa’s new-vehicle market continues to be on an upward trajectory year-on-year.
It is unsurprising that Toyota continues its reign as the leading manufacturer of local car sales in September 2022, with a total of 12,059 vehicles sold. This is largely thanks to its flagship Hilux bakkie, which represented 2,842 out of the total units, while its SUVs and crossovers are also increasingly popular.
With 6,750 vehicles sold locally, Volkswagen Group was in second with Suzuki Auto third, with 4,355 units sold.
Of the total reported industry sale of 47,786 vehicles, 81.9% were represented by dealer sales, 8.2% by sales to the vehicle rental industry, 4.6% to the government, and 1.4% to industry corporate fleets.
The top 10 brands that sold the most cars locally in September 2022 were:

2023 expectations
Despite the positive numbers for September 2022, The new vehicle market’s resilient performance looks likely to come under pressure in the coming months due to the sixth consecutive increase in interest rates since November 2021, said Naamsa.
While the new vehicle market’s performance for the year-to-date is still 13.4% ahead of the corresponding period 2021, the pace of growth experienced in the market is expected to slow down for the balance of the year, Naamsa said.
However, growth prospects for domestic vehicle exports remain optimistic for 2023 on the back of new locally manufactured model introductions during the last quarter of 2022.
