 ·23 Dec 2022

South Africa saw the introduction of several hatchbacks to the local market throughout 2022, with models ranging from the cheapest car in the country to high-end sports variations.

Hatchbacks have long been a popular choice for car buyers in South Africa, and in recent years, their popularity has only continued to grow. A hatchback is a type of car with a rear door that opens upwards, providing access to a storage area behind the back seat.

One of the main reasons for the popularity of hatchbacks in South Africa is their fuel efficiency.

Many hatchbacks are designed with fuel efficiency in mind, making them an economical choice for long-distance driving or commuting. This is an important consideration for many car buyers in a country where fuel prices are at an all-time high.

Hatchbacks also tend to be less expensive than other types of cars, making them a budget-friendly choice for car buyers, while another attraction is their versatility.

With various sizes and styles available, hatchbacks offer something for everyone, from small and fuel-efficient models to larger and more spacious options. This makes them an excellent choice for families, urban dwellers, or anyone who needs extra space for groceries, sports equipment, or other items.

In addition, hatchbacks are often easier to insure and maintain, further adding to their appeal.

Several types of hatchbacks are available on the market, each with unique features and benefits. The subcompact hatchback is a smaller, more fuel-efficient option for city driving. Mid-size hatchbacks offer more space and power, making them a good choice for families or those transporting larger items.

Other types include performance hatchbacks designed for drivers who prioritize speed and handling. These cars usually have sportier styling and a more powerful engine, making them a popular choice for driving enthusiasts. Electric hatchbacks are also becoming increasingly popular as they offer low emissions and a smooth, quiet driving experience.

According to TopAuto, in 2022, South Africa welcomed the latest iteration of the fan-favourite VW Polo and a new, more affordable variation of the Golf GTI dubbed the Jacara Edition.

It also saw the introduction of the fifth-generation Renault Clio, a Toyota Corolla hatch fitted with mild-hybrid technologies, and a new addition to the BMW 1 Series with the Mzanzi Edition.

For the performance enthusiasts, there’s the new Hyundai i30N and the fourth-generation Audi RS3 Sportback – both offering an exhilarating driving experience out on the roads.

On the opposite end of the price spectrum, Suzuki recently updated its S-Presso, the cheapest car in the country, and released two other models this year comprising the Baleno and Celerio.

Similarly, Toyota brought out the updated Starlet, which shares the Baleno’s architecture and uses the same engine.
