New bakkie launches in South Africa – features and pricing

 ·24 Oct 2023

JAC has finally launched the new T9 in South Africa, with a starting price of R529,900.

The T9, first unveiled at the Shanghai Automotive Show only six months ago, resulted from over four years of dedicated development and extensive global testing, noted the group.

“We are thrilled to introduce the exciting new T9 as the range-topper of our T-Series bakkies,” said Karl-Heinz Göbel, the CEO of JAC Motors South Africa.

“The T9 will lead our charge in the double-cab market, with our versatile T8 and economical T6 line-ups focusing on specific target markets within this market segment,” he added.

Although the new bakkie has launched with only one engine option, several other powertrains, including petrol, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric units, are set to launch in the country by 2024.

Features

The new T9 JAC bakkie comes as standard with automatic xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, tail lamps, fog lights, black wheel arches, and two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels.

Additional standard features include:

  • Six airbags;
  • Traction control;
  • Vehicle dynamics control;
  • Electronic stability control;
  • Hill assist and ABS with a brake override system;
  • Electronic brake-force distribution;
  • Tyre-pressure monitoring, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera to ensure safety.

The T9 Lux model comes with some additional features that include leather seats, a multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, automatic climate control, an electronic hand brake, an electronically adjustable driver’s seat, a 7.0-inch instrument cluster, front and rear USB ports, a wireless phone charger, and a 10.4-inch infotainment screen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Super Lux version of the T9 adds several features to the standard equipment of the T9 Lux. These include front parking sensors, welcome lights, auto-folding side mirrors, a 360-degree camera, a sliding sunroof, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, heated front seats, an electronic front passenger seat, privacy glass, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Performance

The new T9 Hunter range will launch with four models, including 4×4 and 4×2 derivatives, with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a 2.0-litre, turbocharged diesel engine.

The diesel unit produces 125kW and 410Nm, while the T9 Super Lux 4×4 derivatives feature a part-time 4×4 system with a low-range transfer case and a rear diff-lock. It offers a towing mass of 3 500 kg (braked).

This setup enables the JAC to achieve an average fuel consumption of 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres. In turn, this translates to a driving range of roughly 1,000 kilometres on its 76-litre tank, according to JAC Motors.

It also has driving modes for Sport, Normal, Eco, and Snow. The T9 is available in seven colours: Star Grey, Metallic Grey, Silver, White, Black, Red and Blue.
