New Mercedes launches in South Africa

Mercedes-Benz has officially launched the new E-Class in South Africa.

As reported by our sister publication TopAuto, the new E-Class will be available in Avantgarde and AMG Line trims.

Both options will have access to one of two separate powertrains, including a 48V mild hybrid (MHEV) technology that provides a boost of 17kW and 205Nm.

The base “E200″ has a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol plant with 150kW and 320Nm, which allows the car to reach 100km/h in 7.5 seconds.

Its average fuel consumption is between 6.4l and 7.3l/100km.

The other option is a”220d” 2.0-litre turbo-diesel block, which produces 145kW and 440Nm.

This option is more powerful than petrol and consumes between 4.8l and 5.5l/100km.

However, it is slightly slower, with it taking 7.6 seconds to hit 100km/h.

The E-Class, no matter the drivetrain, is rear-wheel drive, and gear changes are handled by a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

The new Mercedes also comes with an Agility Control suspension system with selective damping. Buyers will also have the option of installing a rear-axle rear-axle steering package that can turn up to 4.5 degrees, reducing the turning circle by 90cm.

The standard E-Class will also come with driving assistance systems, such as Active Distance Assist Distronic, Attention Assist, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Parking Package with reversing camera and Speed Limit Assist.

Customers can also buy the Driving Assistance Plus package as an extra, with components including Active Steering Assist, which helps with lane-keeping.

“As already on motorways, the E-Class can now also restart automatically in city traffic and on country roads after a longer standstill. Another new feature: if Active Steering Assist is no longer available because the lane markings are not clearly visible, it signals this to the driver by vibrations in the steering wheel,” said Mercedes.

Other extras that customers can buy include Thermotronic automatic climate control, as well as an optional front passenger screen, which extends to the central display.

Pricing for the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is as follows:

The price includes a 2-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and a 5-year/100,000km maintenance plan.
