Big tolls announcement for South Africans planning to travel on the N4 next month

 ·14 Nov 2024

As South Africans prepare for the December holiday season, a significant update awaits road users planning to travel along the N4 highway.

From December 1, 2024, swipe payments at all N4 toll gates will no longer be accepted.

This change, announced by Trans African Concessions (Trac), the firm managing the N4 route, is part of an effort to modernise payment systems and enhance security for motorists.

The N4 highway is a critical link, stretching from the Solomon Mahlangu off-ramp in Tshwane, Gauteng, to the Port of Maputo in Mozambique.

For countless holidaymakers, this route represents a gateway to their year-end destinations.

With the termination of magstripe card payments, Trac is urging drivers to plan ahead and familiarise themselves with alternative payment options.

Motorists can use contactless-enabled debit or credit cards.

These cards rely on EMV (Europay, Visa, and Mastercard) chip technology, which supports secure transactions through “tap and pay” functionality.

In addition, smart devices like smartphones and smartwatches linked to payment apps such as Apple Pay or Samsung Pay will also be accepted.

Trac tags, which provide a convenient, automated toll payment solution, remain a reliable option for frequent travellers.

Cash payments will continue to be accepted for those who prefer traditional methods.

The decision to phase out swipe payments stems from a need to keep pace with advancements in financial technology and improve transaction security at toll gates.

Magnetic stripe cards have become increasingly susceptible to fraud, and their gradual replacement with contactless and chip-based systems reflects a global shift toward safer and more efficient payment methods.

By embracing these modern alternatives, Trac aims to ensure smoother operations and shorter queues at toll plazas, enhancing the overall travel experience for road users.

As the festive season approaches, Trac’s announcement is a timely reminder for holiday travelers to update their payment methods before hitting the road.

Whether it’s through a contactless card, the ease of a smart device, or a Trac tag, ensuring preparedness will help motorists avoid disruptions and focus on enjoying their journey along the N4.
