Tips for South Africans heading back home from holiday

As the year draws to a close and the festive season approaches, South Africans are gearing up for their annual road trips.
However, this time of year also sees a surge in road accidents and incidents; adding to an already high road fatality rate, with over 10,100 deaths on the country’s roads in 2024 thus far.
To help ensure a safe and enjoyable journey for everyone, Suzuki Auto South Africa, in partnership with FleetMax Africa, has released five S.M.A.R.T driving tips as part of their DriveSmart road-safety curriculum.
These tips, focused on awareness, hazard management, distraction avoidance, responsible driving, and consideration for all road users, aim to equip motorists with the knowledge and skills to navigate the busy roads safely.
Brendon Carpenter, Brand Marketing Manager of Suzuki Auto South Africa, said that “South Africans are particularly fond of a good road trip, especially as the year draws to a close.”
“However, a quick look at historical road safety data shows a worryingly high percentage of these journeys don’t go according to plan, with many falling foul to road rage incidents, accidents or worse,” said Carpenter.
He said that some these incidents are not only unnecessary but also avoidable.

S.M.A.R.T driving tips for a safe journey:
S – Scan:
- Constantly scan the road ahead for both moving and stationary hazards.
- Regularly check your rearview and side mirrors – every 5 to 8 seconds – and before braking. This helps assess the distance and speed of vehicles behind you.
M – Manage:
- React to identified hazards swiftly and carefully by adjusting your speed or changing direction.
- Use your horn or flash your headlights to alert other drivers of potential dangers.
- The key is early identification and anticipation, which gives you more time and space to avoid collisions.
A – Avoid:
- Distractions are a major cause of accidents, especially at higher speeds where reaction time is crucial.
- Be mindful of auditory distractions like loud music or conversations, physical distractions like using your phone or adjusting controls, and mental distractions like dwelling on thoughts unrelated to driving.
R – Remember:
- Remember the 5 Cs of defensive driving:
- Concentration: Focus on driving and minimize distractions.
- Competency: Know your vehicle and operate it safely and efficiently.
- Compliance: Obey all traffic rules and regulations.
- Consideration: Be patient and avoid road rage.
- Communication: Use turn signals and hand signals to indicate your intentions clearly and in advance.
T – Think:
- Prioritise the safety of all road users at all times.
- Adopt a mindful driving style to save money, reduce environmental impact, and reach your destination safely.
- Focus on reaching your destination and the loved ones waiting for you, ensuring a journey without regrets.
Ashref Ismail, CEO of FleetMax Africa, emphasises the importance of patience and a relaxed approach to driving during the festive season.
December and early January always see a considerable spike in traffic along the country’s major arterial roads. People tend to become impatient, trying to get to their destinations as quickly as they can. This is a recipe for disaster as many innocent lives are placed at risk,” he said.
Ismail urges motorists to anticipate delays and enjoy the journey.
“Be prepared for delays and enjoy the journey – South Africa is full of scenic drives that should not be rushed.”
The two companies said that by following these S.M.A.R.T driving tips and embracing a patient and responsible approach to driving, South Africans can contribute to safer roads for everyone this festive season.
