New Uber passenger and luggage restrictions in South Africa

 ·15 Apr 2025

Uber has announced new passenger and luggage restrictions in South Africa, which can significantly influence many users.

Uber said these new restrictions aim to make every trip go smoothly and help manage comfort, space, and safety, especially when luggage is involved.

“Please know that this guidance is advisory. If you feel unsure, we recommend that you contact the driver to confirm, as it would depend on the vehicle,” it said.

Luggage is permitted with all Uber rides, including Uber Go, Uber X, Uber Comfort, Uber Black, Uber XL, and Uber Van.

Uber Go is restricted to 2 passengers, whereas Uber X, Uber Comfort, and Uber Black are limited to 3 passengers.

Groups with more than three people should use Uber XL, which can take six passengers, or Uber Van, which can accommodate seven passengers.

This announcement followed the launch of Uber Moto which offers South Africans trips on the back of a motorbike.

“Uber Moto is your new two-wheel alternative to getting around the Western Suburbs of the Joburg CBD,” the company said in a press statement.

“You can request one seat only with Uber Moto. If you need to send a package, we suggest you request a trip using Courier.”

Uber Moto trips are only available in Braamfontein, Melville, Greenside, Brixton, Mayfair, Fordsburg, Rossmore, Langlaagte, Richmond, and the University of Johannesburg.
