Gupta home to be demolished in South Africa

 ·20 Jun 2026

Notice has been given that one of the Saxonwold homes tied to the controversial Gupta family will be demolished and rebuilt.

The notice was placed up in the past few weeks, giving interested parties until 17 July to raise any concerns.

The reason for the notice and the submission window is that, like many properties in the area, the home is on a heritage property, which requires special permissions to alter.

Saxonwold is one of the oldest suburbs in Johannesburg, having been developed into a township in 1925.

Because of its age, the suburb is home to many heritage properties—those generally older than 60 years and protected under the National Heritage Resources Act (NHRA).

These properties require special permits for alterations, renovations, or demolition.

Notice of the demolition was given by the property owners, listed as Confident Concept Pty (Ltd)—the exact same Gupta-linked company that was forced to sell the properties at auction in 2025.

The auction saw the disposal of three ‘Gupta mansions’ as part of the business rescue plan of Confident Concept.

The company was involved in years-long litigation with the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), allegedly owing over R726,000 in rates and taxes.

Other legal challenges ran concurrently, with the company and other Gupta-linked entities entering business rescue proceedings at the time.

The Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that Confident Concept’s assets go up for public auction, which resulted in the sale of the three Saxonwold properties for under R35 million.

This was a massive discount on the properties’ combined value, pegged at R64 million at the time.

The property now set for demolition is 3 Saxonwold Drive, the smallest of the properties, valued at R5.5 million and selling at auction for R3.3 million—a 40% discount.

Notably, the property was the only one sold at the public auction, with 5 and 7 Saxonwold Drive—the larger properties—selling privately at a later date.

After the auction, residents in the area soon noted that the properties were back on the market. 3 Saxonwold Drive is currently listed as under offer, with a listed sale price of R4 million.

The other Gupta properties are also listed for sale.

According to the development notice, the existing house and outbuildings at 3 Saxonwold Drive will be demolished, making room for a new house, cottage and staff rooms.

The property is a sizeable 3,687 square metre stand, dwarfing the 256 square metre main house that will demolished.

To be demolished: No 3 Saxonwold Drive
