New ultra-luxury international hotel launches in South Africa, sitting right next to superyachts

Marriott International has opened its newest EDITION series luxury hotel in Cape Town, at Quay 7 of the V&A Waterfront.

The new luxury hotel overlooks Cape Town’s superyacht marina and features views of the iconic Table Mountain.

It was designed by Neri&Hu in collaboration with local architects to reflect the surrounding warehouse structures that previously occupied the area.

One of the standout features of the new building is the drum, a cylindrical opening at the centre of the hotel.

EDITION’s Cape Town location features 142 rooms and suites, with views of the surrounding ocean and mountains.

“The hotel’s 142 guestrooms and suites balance refined comfort with a distinctly residential sensibility,” EDITION described.

The building itself will also feature various artworks and sculptures as “a reflection of Africa’s creative landscape”.

Numerous restaurants are also featured in the new hotel, overseen by Executive Chef Phil Carmichael and in partnership with South Africa’s George Hunter.

The hotel’s signature restaurant, Shale, will offer seasonal menus drawing on local producers and Cape Town’s wineries.

A spa is also featured at the new location, which sits below sea level with five treatment rooms and a couples suite.

“Alongside five treatment rooms and a couples’ suite, the spa features a sauna and steam room, while infrared beds and Therabody recovery boots offer targeted support for rest and recovery,” EDITION said.

“The focus on wellbeing continues with a 24-hour gym and a daily programme of yoga, breathwork, sound baths and movement sessions beside the heated rooftop pool and sun deck.”

Several spaces are also included in the hotel for events and meetings, including a ballroom and terrace for private events.

“At its heart is the flexible ballroom with a capacity of up to 200 people, complemented by a boardroom, two meeting studios and a private event terrace,” EDITION said.

Expansion into Cape Town

The newest EDITION hotel in Cape Town will be part of an expansive portfolio of luxury hotels which the group operates.

The group currently has 23 hotels in areas including Barcelona, Madrid, Rome and New York’s Times Square.

EDITION’s Senior Vice President and Global Brand Leader, George Fleck, said the move to Cape Town was due to several factors.

“Cape Town has a distinctive energy shaped by extraordinary landscapes, diverse influences and an exceptional culinary scene,” he said.

“As one of the world’s most compelling cultural capitals, it is a natural home for EDITION.”

V&A Waterfront CEO, Graham Wood, said the new hotel was a sign of confidence for Cape Town’s tourism industry.

“The opening of The Cape Town EDITION is an important milestone in the V&A Waterfront’s continued evolution and a strong expression of confidence in Cape Town as a globally competitive tourism and investment destination,” he said.

“The EDITION brings an exceptional international hospitality brand into a working harbour and connects it to the wider Waterfront neighbourhood through new dining, cultural and public-facing experiences.”

“It also signals the next chapter for Granger Bay: a well-connected waterfront district that creates long term value for Cape Town, our visitors and the communities we serve.”

Tourism is a major industry in Cape Town, accounting for roughly R24.5 billion in direct spending in 2025 and supporting over 106,000 jobs in the city.

This is largely driven by foreign tourism, which brought in approximately R19 billion in direct spending in 2025.

Overall, the tourism industry makes up 6.3% of the city’s total gross added value, despite the sector contracting in 2025.

The year-on-year decline in tourism spending in 2025 was attributed to lower domestic spending, which dropped by 32%.
