MTN wants more spectrum

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) announced in a statement today (19 August 2013) that it will hold public hearings after MTN applied for additional frequency spectrum.

MTN has applied for spectrum in the 2,015MHz band, Icasa said.

According to Icasa, MTN said that the spectrum in this band is capable of providing sufficient capacity to support the rapid increase in data traffic being experienced by network operators, both nationally and globally.

Icasa said it has received 4 submissions in respect of MTN’s application, namely from Cell C, Neotel, Vodacom and Smile Communications.

The regulator has scheduled public hearings for all the interested stakeholders on 21 August 2013 from 09:00 at its offices in Sandton.
