Telkom fibre-to-the-home details

Telkom says it has passed through 1,733 homes to enable a fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service, with 254 homes already connected.

The telco announced on 13 June 2014 plans to roll out FTTH connectivity to over twenty suburbs.

It also pointed to a commercial launch of basic voice and broadband FTTH/B to enable the sale of up to 100Mbps of DSL by October 2014.

In a presentation at an Investor Day at its National Network Operations Centre (NNOC) in Centurion Pretoria, on Monday (4 August), Telkom chief technology officer, Alphonzo Samuels, said that the group aims to have 23 suburbs covered with FTTH by December 2014.

Telkom would also target 25,000 homes passed by March 2015.

Samuels said that Telkom Mobile 3G coverage was at approximately 55% of the population, with 2,428 sites on air.

He said that Telkom has 1,165 LTE sites on air, with 2,426 Wi-Fi access points.

Samuels said that successful wholesalers have managed to develop their non voice
revenue, both locally and internationally.

Most of the wholesale revenue in mature markets is non voice related, he said, adding that FTTH better allows incumbents to defend their investment.

“Successful wholesalers have managed to extend their activities internationally,” Samuels said.

In June, Telkom unveiled a fibre to the home portal, encouraging customers to enter their details to determine if their neighbourhood is earmarked for FTTH.

The Telkom map provided the following details about broadband access in an area:
