Times Media to launch video-on-demand
Times Media Group, publisher of The Sunday Times, The Sowetan, and BusinessDay, is set to launch a video-on-demand service next month.
The listed media group, which has Gallo Music Group and Times Media Films in its stable, will launch the service, Vidi, as a subscription and on-demand service providing TV series and movie rentals via the internet.
Like DStv’s movie box office movie rental service, Vidi will also offer films recently off the circuit, a spokesperson for the new entity said.
The group is expected to unveil pricing and additional information on 10 September.
The video streaming and on-demand space is hotting up among mobile operators in South Africa with Vodacom, MTN, and Telkom all believed to be at various stages of launching services as they bid to drive higher subscriber revenue through data rich packages.
In April, Discover Digital, a South African digital entertainment business, said it had concluded its first sports content deal in anticipation of the launch of internet TV in South Africa in 2014.
