FNB Connect launches eSIMs

 ·18 Nov 2024

FNB Connect is now offering its retail and commercial clients the opportunity to take up embedded SIM cards (eSIMs) across its product suite.

The Big Four bank said that that eSIMs enhance the digital experience for customers by speeding up time between sign up and activation, as it will take less than three minutes to connect to a mobile network with no additional time needed for the delivery of a physical SIM card.

“We’ve seen an overwhelming number of our Retail and Commercial Banking customers connect to the FNB App through e-SIM-ready devices,” said Sashin Sookroo, CEO of FNB Connect.

“In fact, the number of FNB customers with e-SIM enabled smartphones has grown by 169% in the past three years.”

“Moreover, we expect these numbers to grow further as eSIM-enabled devices become more readily available across more devices with more affordable price points.”

FNB is now the first South African banking MVNO to launch an eSIM offering.

Sookroo added that the eSIM is a game changer as it will enable its customers to port their numbers to them more easily, as an eSIm is a digital chip embedded into one’s device that can connect to multiple mobile networks without needing to physically swap SIM cards.

“As we prepare to launch a number of exciting eSIM-based services, we are thrilled to announce that we are also giving qualifying customers more value on our free FNB Connect eSIMs with an extra 100GB free per month for six months,” said Sookroo.

FNB added that the introduction of eSIMs will elimiate the need for the production, warehousing, and delivery of physical SIM cards, which should have a net positive environmental impact over time.

“In line with FNB’s aspiration to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030 in our South African operations, we’re excited to see how this move will help us and our customers to minimise our environmental impact while reducing plastic waste,” said Sookroo.
