SA crime stats are only the tip of the iceberg: ISS

 ·3 Oct 2015

The South African Police Service (SAPS) and Stats SA this week released the latest crime statistics for the country, painting a picture of ups and downs across 27 categories of crime.

The data showed that, while there were improvements in cases of assault and sexual offenses, things worsened in terms of murder, hijackings, break-ins and common robbery.

The Institute for Security Studies has provided a trio of hi-res infographics, putting the stats into perspective.

According to the ISS, despite an apparent improvement in the statistics related to sexual offences – a 5.4% decrease according to the SAPS – research shows that only 1 in 13 cases of rape are actually reported to police.

The group also notes that there are many unknowns hidden within the data- and even when some of the more positive shifts are expressed on a per-day level, they paint a worrying picture.
