South Africa has been awarded 84 Blue Flag status sites for 2015, made up of beaches, marinas, boats as well as pilot status sites – all recognised for their excellence in the areas of cleanliness, safety, environmental standards and amenities.
Forty-nine Blue Flag sites have been listed in the Western Cape alone, with Cape Town laying claim to seven blue flag beaches in total – the highest number for any one city.
Despite the strong showing Vincent Shacks, Blue Flag Programme Leader, confirmed this year’s 39 beaches was a slip down from last year’s 49 confirmed Blue Flag beaches across South Africa.

A remarkable 24 beaches have been on the programme for more than five consecutive years and two of these have been participating for all fifteen years that the programme has been running in the country.
