Millions of rands in cash has been stolen in a daring heist at OR Tambo International airport.
According to reports, robbers in a van marked with police branding and flashing lights approached high-risk security GuardForce personnel as they were transporting the money to a flight bound for London on Tuesday night.
An armed gang then held up the guards and took boxes containing cash – reportedly going for specific ones as if they knew exactly what to go for – before making off with the haul.
Airports Company South Africa said that there were no injuries and no shots were fired and that a high-level investigation by the Hawks and other law enforcement agencies is already underway.
The Hawks could not confirm the exact amount stolen in the heist, but several reports have quoted figures ranging from R20 million in cash to almost R200 million in US dollars.
This is not the first heist to take place at OR Tambo – in 2016 R100 million was stolen in another heist at the airport, which is also known for other criminal activity such as shadowing and cash in transit robberies.
