Consumer price inflation (CPI) eased further to 4.9 percent in July, Statistics South Africa said on Wednesday (22 August 2012).

“The official inflation rate (ie the percentage change in the CPI for all urban areas in July 2012 compared with that in July 2011) was 4.9 percent at July 2012,” the agency said in a brief statement.

This rate was 0.6 percentage points lower than the corresponding annual rate of 5.5 percent in June.

Inflation has been on a downward trend since April this year, when it reached 6.1 percent.
