Power utility Eskom has asked for an extension of approximately one month to submit its application for tariff increases in order to do “additional scenarios”‚ which government has requested.

Eskom was due to submit its application for the period from 1 April 2013 on Friday.

Electricity tariffs are decided by the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) in multi-year price determinations (MYPDs)‚ with the current determination (MYPD 2) covering the period up to March 31 2013.

Nersa conducts an extensive programme of public participation before making its decision‚ which is due early next year. Once Eskom has submitted its application it will announce the details and encourage South Africans to participate in the process and engage with the application.

Though previous determinations have been for three years‚ Eskom will propose a five-year determination for MYPD 3 to ensure what it says will be a “predictable‚ longer-term price path for customers‚ investors and the country”.
