SA unemployment rises to 25.5%

South Africa’s unemployment rate rose to 25.5% in the quarter ended September 2012 – the third quarter – from 24.9% in the second quarter‚ Statistics South Africa’s quarterly labour force survey released on Thursday shows.

This means there were 4.7 million unemployed people in the third quarter‚ the highest level since the introduction of the QLFS in the thrid quarter of 2008.

Of the 4.7 million persons looking for work‚ 3.1 milion of them have been looking for a period of one year or longer.

The figures show that the number of unemployed persons increased by 197‚000 between the second and third quarters‚ following a decline of 56‚000 persons in the previous quarter.
