Naspers deal above board: Madonsela
Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has found no evidence of improper conduct in a land deal between the City of Cape Town and Naspers, following a complaint by ANC Chief Whip Mathole Motshekga, in parliament in March.
Motshekga requested the Public Protector investigate whether the city’s purchase of the piece of land from Naspers Properties for R106 million was above board, as independent property experts had reportedly valued the land at no more than R50 million.
The land deal involved the City of Cape Town’s purchase of the land for the expansion of the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), in which the city is a shareholder.
Madonsela on Wednesday (5 December) released a report titled: Over a Barrel, in which she declared that none of the allegations of improper conduct were substantiated by evidence.
Madonsela said in her report that she could find no evidence to indicate collusion between the two parties, and neither could she find any evidence of individuals improperly benefiting through the transaction.
