A new survey conducted by Travel+Leasure has named Cape Town as the 4th best city in the world, and the best in Africa.

Travel + Leasure is a monthly international travel magazine and claims to have 4.8 million readers. The magazine compiles an annual list of top cities, hotels and getaways, based on a questionnaire given to its readers.

For its 2013 best cities ranking, Cape Town retained the same position as it did in 2012, beaten only by Florence (Italy), Istanbul (Turkey) and Bankok (Thailand)

# City Country Score
1 Bangkok Thailand 90.40
2 Istanbul Turkey 89.96
3 Florence Italy 89.84
4 Cape Town South Africa 89.57

6 Rome Italy 89.09
7 Charleston USA 88.65
8 Barcelona Spain 88.45
9 Paris France 88.35

The scores are indexed averages of responses concerning applicable characteristics, rated on scale of 1 to 5.

The cities were scored on their sights, culture/arts, restaurants/food, people, shopping, value – as well as an optional criterion for romance.

South Africa is also home to 3 of the top 10 hotels listed by the magazine:

  • Singita, Kruger National Park (3rd)
  • Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve (9th)
  • Singita Sabi Sand (10th)
