New bank branches for Smart ID and passports in South Africa incoming

The number of bank branches that support the application or renewal of smart ID cards and passports is set to nearly double.

In 2016, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) allowed staff to work in bank branches nationwide to facilitate smart ID card applications and passport renewals.

The Banking Association of South Africa (BASA) has helped discussions to expand the service.

BASA’s prudential head, Mark Brits, told MyBroadband that the agreements to expand the service should be mostly completed and signed by the end of September 2024.

The public-private partnerships would allow the banks to use their employees to run the service while Home Affairs staff are moved to other projects.

Speaking to MyBroadband, several banks confirmed that they would expand the smart ID and passport service to their existing branches once the PPPs were established.

FNB plans to add 18 eHomeAffairs-enabled branches, taking the total tally to 25.

Absa currently has an additional 12 branches ready for activation.

Discovery Bank also announced that it plans to expand the service by adding four following locations, including Sea Point and Century City in Cape Town, Pretoria and Umhlanga. The bank currently only operates

Nedbank also confirmed it wanted to expand its home affairs services, but it did not state how many new branches it would add.

Standard Bank was the only “big four” bank that did not plan to expand its home affairs branches.

The largest bank in South Africa by assets under management said that it would review its strategy once it had fully embedded the PPP agreement and operating mode.

The central banks plan to add 34 new branches in total, which would more than double the current footprint of 30 locations to 64.

With those new branches still on their way, South African can find the details of the 30 branches where South Africans can currently renew their passport and/or Smart ID below:
