Where South Africa’s richest people live

The latest report by New World Wealth shows which areas in South Africa are home to the most high net worth individuals.
According to the report, Johannesburg remains the most popular city for HNWIs, with half of the super wealthy population living there.
In 2014, 23,400 of 46,800 HNWIs called Joburg home, far above South Africa’s second wealthiest city, Cape Town, where 8,900 HNWIs reside.
HNWIs are defined as people who have a net worth of US$1 million or more.

And while Johannesburg has shown double digit growth (13%) in HNWIs since 2007, Durban has had the biggest rise in HNWI residents, showing an increase of 29%.
Durban includes the affluent suburbs of Umhlanga, La Lucia, Zimbali and Mount Edgecombe.

Looking at multi-millionaires – HNWIs worth US$10 million or more – national distribution shows a similar pattern.
Joburg is the top city, home to 990 (48%) multi-millionaires, followed by Cape Town with 380, and Durban with 120 individuals.

The top estates are Zimbali Estate in KwaZulu Natal, and Erinvale Estate in the Western Cape, which are home to 20 multi-millionaires each.
