Woolworths says it will be increasing security measures across all stores after explosions hit two of its branches in South Africa this week.

The retailer confirmed that improvised explosive devices detonated at two of its stores during the early hours of Thursday, 28 May, and Friday, 29 May.

The first incident took place at the Menlyn Park branch in Pretoria, while the second occurred at the Preller Square store in Bloemfontein.

According to Woolworths, both explosions happened between 01h00 and 02h00 when the stores were closed, and no injuries were reported in either incident.

“This week, Woolworths was the target of two separate incidents in our stores,” the company said in a statement.

The retailer added that the Menlyn Park store has since reopened, while the Preller Square branch remains closed as investigations continue.

“Most importantly, Woolworths is relieved to share that no one was harmed in either incident,” the company said.

Woolworths noted that some employees had been affected by the events and said it was providing support to staff members following the incidents.

“Some staff members have, understandably, been affected by the events and Woolworths is providing all of the necessary support to our teams,” it said.

The company said the South African Police Service (SAPS) was informed immediately after both incidents, and thorough sweeps were conducted at the affected stores to ensure there were no additional threats.

The Hawks have also been appointed to investigate the matter.

Woolworths said it was cooperating fully with authorities and would continue to assist investigators as the probe unfolds.

“At this stage, no further information on the nature of the devices or the motive behind these attacks is available,” the retailer said.

As a precautionary measure, Woolworths confirmed that security and vigilance have been heightened at stores nationwide.

The company has also brought in specialist forensic experts to strengthen security and intelligence capabilities alongside ongoing work by law enforcement agencies.

“Vigilance across Woolworths stores nationwide has increased, and specialist forensic experts have been contracted to strengthen security and intelligence,” the statement said.

Incoming Group CEO Sam Ngumeni said the retailer would continue prioritising the safety of customers and employees.

“Woolworths is a proudly South African brand that stands for integrity and the courage to do the right thing,” Ngumeni said.

“We are taking every action and doing everything in our power to protect our people and customers, who remain our first priority.”

Ngumeni added that despite the attacks, the retailer would continue operating as normal.

“Our doors will stay open, and our values will continue to be evident in every experience, and every product, as they have always been,” he said.
