South Africans get the hump with Cell C advert

A new Cell C advert, featuring a dog getting amorous with a man’s leg has generated more than 100 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa.

This is according to a report on ENCA, which reported that by June 17, approximately 50 people had filed complaints with the advertising watchdog, with that number more than doubling – to 118 – by the end of Thursday (18 June).

The advert – Are you tired of being taken advantage of? – shows a dog mounting a mobile customer’s leg, suggesting that he is being ‘taken advantage’ of.

“Watch our new brand TV ad and share it if you think it’s the funniest ad you’ve seen in a while,” said Cell C on its Youtube channel.

A spokesperson for the ASASA, told eNCA that the bulk of complaints were around the fact that the advert “is not suitable for children as the dog is shown to be performing an inappropriate act that is not suitable to be flighted during prime time, as this is family time.”

The advert evoked a wide range of opinion on Cell C’s Youtube channel.

“I really think this is disgusting.  Who ever gave the ok for this? Not funny at all – a dog humping a man’s leg … really!! So not funny!!”

“HAHAHAHA!!!! Absolutely fabulous! Watch out Trevor!”

“Desperate company, desperate ad. Should spend their money improving the really crap network and improving customer service.”

“I don’t understand the people complaining. This Ad is pure genius. I love it.”
