The Daily Show with Trevor Noah premiered on Comedy Central on 28 September, replacing the iconic The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
Feedback from critics and viewers alike following the show said that Noah “nailed it”.
Comedy Central announced in March that Noah would replace Stewart as The Daily Show host. Stewart hosted the show for over 15 years.
The decision to hire Noah was a controversial one, given that he is a foreigner. Many said the job should have gone to a woman, and an American.
In his opening to the show, Noah addressed the topic with some punchy lines.
“Why isn’t a woman hosting the show, because surely it’s about time. It turns out that they did ask women to host and the women turned it down because they had better things to do, and clearly knew something I didn’t,” said Noah.
“Also, why didn’t they get an American to host?” Noah continued. “Again, Comedy Central tried and those people also declined. So once more a job Americans rejected is now being done by an immigrant.”
South Africans can watch Noah’s first episode on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah on Comedy Central (DSTV channel 122) on Tuesday 29 September at 21:00.
