The South African Police Service (SAPS) and Stats SA this week released the latest crime statistics for the country, painting a picture of ups and downs across 27 categories of crime.<\/p>\n

The data showed that, while there were improvements in cases of assault and sexual offenses, things worsened in terms of murder, hijackings, break-ins and common robbery.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Institute for Security Studies has provided a trio of hi-res infographics, putting the stats into perspective.<\/p>\n

According to the ISS, despite an apparent improvement in the statistics related to sexual offences – a 5.4% decrease according to the SAPS – research shows that only 1 in 13 cases of rape are actually reported to police.<\/p>\n

The group also notes that there are many unknowns hidden within the data- and even when some of the more positive shifts are expressed on a per-day level, they paint a worrying picture.<\/p>\n
