7,000 car crashes on South Africa&#8217;s busiest roads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) says it responded to over 40,000 incidents via its freeway management system, including as many as 6,900 crashes.<\/p>\n<p>The data was published Sanral&#8217;s <span class=\"st\">annual report for the 2014\/2015<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The road agency&#8217;s freeway management system has already been deployed in Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Western Cape and is being expanded.<\/p>\n<p>The South African national road network consists of\u00a0 21,403km of roads.<\/p>\n<p>The national and provincial highways managed by Sanral are in the process of being converted into \u201csmart roads\u201d through a freeway management system which includes CCTV cameras that relay the information to Traffic Management Centres and allow operators to detect crashes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gauteng<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gauteng\u2019s freeway management system facilitated a coordinated response to about 16,000 incidents, including 3,500 crashes, in 2014\/15.<\/p>\n<p>Sanral said its on-road services, incident and medical response units, and light and heavy towing units responded to about 8,000 incidents.<\/p>\n<p>The Gauteng route of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) project includes portions of the N1, with extensions on the N4, N12, and N17<\/p>\n<p><strong>KwaZulu-Natal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The KwaZulu-Natal freeway management system covers about 120km of the busiest sections of the N2 and N3 freeways.<\/p>\n<p>Its traffic management centre also monitors the Tongaat mainline, the King Shaka ramp and the Mariannhill mainline toll plazas and helps manage vehicle queues during busy holiday periods.<\/p>\n<p>Sanral said it aims to extend the network on the N3 between Camperdown and Cedara in the next reporting period.<\/p>\n<p>The traffic management centre dealt with an average of 9,600 traffic incidents, including 1,100 crashes, in 2014\/15.<\/p>\n<p>Stationary, mostly heavy, vehicles accounted for about 55% of incidents, while about 22% were traffic congestion incidents.<\/p>\n<p>About 12% of the incidents were crashes, of which more than 70% involved light vehicles in single or multiple vehicle collisions.<\/p>\n<p>Most crashes occurred between the EB Cloete system interchange and Nandi Drive on the N2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cape Town<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cape Town\u2019s freeway management system facilitated the coordinated response to nearly 15,000 incidents, including 2,300 crashes, during 2014\/15.<\/p>\n<p>The detection and accident clearance times continue to decrease \u2013 the average detection time during the reporting period was less than 2.5 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The Cape Town Freeway Management System (FMS) covers 155 km of the busiest freeways that fall under the jurisdiction of the City of Cape Town.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">More on Sanral and South Africa&#8217;s
