{"id":100374,"date":"2015-10-06T19:30:40","date_gmt":"2015-10-06T17:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=100374"},"modified":"2015-10-06T17:50:56","modified_gmt":"2015-10-06T15:50:56","slug":"rich-white-men-in-suits-still-dominate-business-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/100374\/rich-white-men-in-suits-still-dominate-business-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Rich white men in suits still dominate business in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While only 10% of JSE listed companies have a non-white CEO at the helm, looking at the make up of company boards paints an equally worrying picture.<\/p>\n<p>Recent data from\u00a0the<a href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/general\/100296\/number-of-black-ceos-in-sa-declining\/\"> 2015 Jack Hammer Executive Report<\/a> showed that the number of black CEOs running the top 40 JSE listed companies has declined from 15% in 2014 to only 10% in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Debbie Goodman-Bhyat\u201a CEO of the executive recruitment company\u201a \u201cthe big picture suggests that executive transformation is set to remain peripheral for the next five to 10 years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The report\u00a0also showed that\u201a out of a total of 334 people constituting the executive teams in SA\u2019s Top 40 companies\u201a 21% were black South Africans.<\/p>\n<p>BusinessTech found that of 537 directors on South Africa&#8217;s top 40 listed company boards, 72% (386) are white.<\/p>\n<p>That means less than a third (28% &#8211; or 151) of all directorate positions are held by non-white executives &#8211; and of the total, even fewer are held by women, only 18% (95).<\/p>\n<p>On average, companies have boards of 13 members &#8211; nine white and four non-white. On average, two board members will be women.<\/p>\n<p>All data on company directorates were sourced from their respective websites and latest integrated reports, and includes both executive and non-executive directors. Company secretaries were not included.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Diversity-JSE.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-100378\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Diversity-JSE.png\" alt=\"Diversity on the JSE\" width=\"472\" height=\"1394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Diversity-JSE.png 472w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Diversity-JSE-102x300.png 102w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Diversity-JSE-347x1024.png 347w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Most and least diverse companies<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that the four companies led by non-white CEOs are not necessarily the most diverse companies, overall.<\/p>\n<p>MTN (Sifiso Dabengwa), FirstRand (Sizwe Nxasana), Vodacom (Shameel Joosub) and Tiger Brands (Peter Matlare) are all headed up by a non-white executive, however only MTN has more than half its board represented by non-white directors &#8211; Aspen &#8211; with 30% of its board of 10 being filled by women.<\/p>\n<p>The company with the highest female representation is Old Mutual, which has four women on its board of 13 (38.5%), followed by Netcare, which has three women, on its board of 9 (33.3%).<\/p>\n<p>Bidvest shares the top with Old Mutual with the highest number of women on its board &#8211;
