While some currencies are instantly recognizable wherever you are in the world, others may go amiss to those who don’t deal with them on a daily basis.<\/p>\n

Everyone should be able to recognize a US dollar – as its the most traded currency in the world – and the Euro has become widely recognised since its introduction in 1999.<\/p>\n

According to data from the latest Triennial Central Bank Survey (2013),\u00a0coordinated by the\u00a0Bank for International Settlements, the South African rand is the 18th most traded currency in the world.<\/p>\n

After the US dollar – which dominates with 87% of all trades – the Euro (33.4%) is a comfortable second, while the Japanese Yen trails in third (23%).<\/p>\n

(If you’re wondering why the top 3 currencies extend past 100% in trade share, it’s because there are two currencies involved in trades, so the sum of the percentage shares of individual currencies totals 200% instead of 100%.)<\/p>\n
