{"id":101082,"date":"2015-10-14T07:45:02","date_gmt":"2015-10-14T05:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=101082"},"modified":"2015-10-14T07:45:02","modified_gmt":"2015-10-14T05:45:02","slug":"eskom-wants-harsher-sentences-for-electricity-thieves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/101082\/eskom-wants-harsher-sentences-for-electricity-thieves\/","title":{"rendered":"Eskom wants harsher sentences for electricity thieves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If Eskom has its way, &#8220;izinyoka&#8221; &#8211; the isiZulu word for snakes &#8211; who steal electricity will have to pay up to R60 000 in penalties.<\/p>\n<p>The entity proposed that stealing electricity be added as a new offence to the criminal matters amendment bill and that it should carry heavy penalties.<\/p>\n<p>Presenting its arguments on the first day of public hearings into the bill, Eskom\u2019s Neo Tsholanku detailed the losses it suffered through electricity theft.<\/p>\n<p>The bill proposes criminalising the unlawful and intentional tampering with, and the damaging or destroying of, essential infrastructure &#8211; and provides for the imposition of severe penalties, including up to 30 years in jail.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom wants the penalties added to the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Tsholanku proposed that first offenders pay R15 000, R30 000 for second offences, and R60 000 for third and other offences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The intention is not to send grandmas to prison.
