{"id":101430,"date":"2015-10-16T12:10:38","date_gmt":"2015-10-16T10:10:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=101430"},"modified":"2015-10-16T12:12:18","modified_gmt":"2015-10-16T10:12:18","slug":"mtn-threatens-to-pull-out-of-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/101430\/mtn-threatens-to-pull-out-of-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"MTN threatens to pull out of South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mg.co.za\/article\/2015-10-16-00-mtn-bullies-sa-with-jobs-threat\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Mail &amp; Guardian reported<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that MTN has threatened Parliament that if its tax credit is rescinded, it will look at moving the company overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Last week the newspaper reported that <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/141408-mtn-moved-billions-to-offshore-tax-havens-mg.html\" target=\"_blank\">MTN moved billions of rands<\/a><\/strong> which were earned in Africa to offshore tax havens.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mg.co.za\/article\/2015-10-09-00-ramaphosa-and-mtns-offshore-stash\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>An investigation by the Mail &amp; Guardian\u2019s amaBhungane unit<\/strong><\/a> found that most of the money landed in Mauritius.<\/p>\n<p>The money was badged as \u201cmanagement fees\u201d, but according to the report MTN employs no people in Mauritius \u2013 and essentially only owns a postbox in the country.<\/p>\n<p>MTN responded by saying it takes serious exception to any suggestion that it is involved in a tax avoidance scheme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch suggestions lack facts or merit, and could be very damaging to our brand,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt no point has MTN ever been found to be involved in any scheme that seeks to help the company avoid its tax or legal responsibilities in any jurisdiction where we operate, including South Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Mail &amp; Guardian has now reported that MTN is \u201cfighting to keep the tax break in the face of a treasury proposal that it should be scrapped\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, MTN told Parliament it \u201cmight move its headquarters abroad if the tax credit was removed\u201d.
