{"id":102697,"date":"2015-11-01T19:30:19","date_gmt":"2015-11-01T17:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=102697"},"modified":"2015-11-01T23:02:51","modified_gmt":"2015-11-01T21:02:51","slug":"how-much-it-costs-to-get-your-degree-at-university-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/102697\/how-much-it-costs-to-get-your-degree-at-university-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"How much it costs to get your degree at university in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The recent, and in some cases on going protest against the high fees for tertiary education, has pushed all institutions in South Africa under the microscope.<\/p>\n<p>The protest action by the country&#8217;s youth, led to president Jacob Zuma announcing a zero percent fee increase among universities in 2016, and has opened up the debate on whether or not tertiary education should be free for all.<\/p>\n<p>The genuine concern raised by students was hijacked by all three of the country&#8217;s largest political parties in some shape or form.<\/p>\n<p>Economic Freedom Fighters leader, Julius Malema, on Monday marched to the JSE to hand over <a href=\"http:\/\/effighters.org.za\/eff-memorandum-to-johannesburg-stock-exchange-27-october-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\">memorandum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Among the many terms within that memorandum, was the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Each and every company in the JSE should adopt a minimum of 100 students and assist with their higher education and training programmes and bursaries from registration, tuition, residence, food, books, and transport money for their adopted students.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It begs the question, how much does it cost for a student to attend university in South Africa, and how much would it cost companies on the JSE?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/africacheck.org\/reports\/how-much-will-it-cost-to-go-to-a-south-african-university-in-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">Much<\/a> has already been written about the tuition costs at South Africa&#8217;s top universities, including an <a href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/general\/77079\/top-sa-universities-how-much-they-cost\/\" target=\"_blank\">article published by BusinessTech<\/a> in January.<\/p>\n<p>Tuition for courses varies quite substantially, from R24,000 to as much as R64,500, for a Bachelor of Medicine (MBBCh) at the University of Cape Town.<\/p>\n<p>BusinessTech assumes an average of R35,000 annually among the top institutions to study a <span class=\"chart-title\">Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree, Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uct.ac.za\/apply\/intlapplicants\/degree\/services\/living\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Cape Town<\/a> guides international students of the costs associated with attending the university:<\/p>\n<div class=\"bt_table\">\n<div class=\"table-responsive\"><table class=\"table\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"6\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th bgcolor=\"#CCCCCC\" width=\"10%\">#<\/th>\n<th bgcolor=\"#CCCCCC\" width=\"45%\">Expenses<\/th>\n<th bgcolor=\"#CCCCCC\" width=\"45%\">Rand per month<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>1<\/td>\n<td>Rent<\/td>\n<td>4 000<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>2<\/td>\n<td>Living costs<\/td>\n<td>1 500<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>3<\/td>\n<td>Food<\/td>\n<td>2 000<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>4<\/td>\n<td>Transport<\/td>\n<td>1 000<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>5<\/td>\n<td>Pocket Money<\/td>\n<td>1 500<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>6<\/td>\n<td>Books &amp; Stationery (per semester)<\/td>\n<td>7 000<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This total above annually comes to an estimated R10,000 per month, without books, which alone costs an estimated R14,000 annually.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukzn.ac.za\/docs\/general-docs\/student-fees-guide-20143F5B22590CA1.pdf?sfvrsn=2\" target=\"_blank\">University of KwaZulu-Natal <\/a>or UKZN warns its international students to take into account of a range of expenses, which they may have to meet, dependent on their particular course of study and needs, which may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Orientation<\/li>\n<li>Text materials (issued by the University)<\/li>\n<li>Field Trips<\/li>\n<li>Books, stationery and equipment<\/li>\n<li>Transport (off campus)<\/li>\n<li>Sports clubs and societies (optional)<\/li>\n<li>Pocket money<\/li>\n<li>Incidental medical expenses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;As a guideline a total amount of at least <strong>R30,240<\/strong> should be allowed for a full years study to cover the above,&#8221; it says.<\/p>\n<p>Its university residence fees amount to R27,250 for accommodation fees, and R23,980 for meals, taking live in fees to <strong>R51,230<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>With tuition fees at an average of <strong>R35,000<\/strong>, and adding the three totals, it costs an international student approximately<strong> R116,500 <\/strong>to attend UKZN.<\/p>\n<p>For UCT, it may be as much as <strong>R150,000 <\/strong>for students who live away from campus, and assuming that they take vacation time.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Accommodation<\/h3>\n<p>Universities offer various housing and accommodation for students.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Cape Town\u2019s mountain views come at the greatest cost to students looking for accommodation, with a single residence (self-catering) costing R50,100 per student per year, with double rooms coming in at R35,800 per student per year.<\/p>\n<p>On the opposite end of the scale, North-West University\u2019s residences are less than half that, at R18,280 for a single room residence, and R17,630 for a double room sharing residence.<\/p>\n<p>Wits res students can expect to pay R30,192 for single and R27,232 for double sharing accommodation \u2013 the second highest fees.<\/p>\n<p>Stellenbosch\u00a0students will pay approximately R35,000 (for girls) and R36,000 (for boys) and R29,000 \u2013 R30,000 for single and double residences, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>If companies on the JSE are compelled to &#8216;adopt&#8217;
