{"id":103529,"date":"2015-11-10T10:31:05","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T08:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=103529"},"modified":"2015-11-10T10:34:26","modified_gmt":"2015-11-10T08:34:26","slug":"mtn-vs-vodacom-share-price-in-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/103529\/mtn-vs-vodacom-share-price-in-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"MTN vs Vodacom share price in 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MTN&#8217;s reign as South Africa&#8217;s largest mobile operator by market value is under threat, as it tries to dig itself out of a $5.2 billion hole in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom, the country&#8217;s largest operator by subscriber base, is bearing down on its beleaguered adversary, following stellar interim results reported on Monday, which saw the company&#8217;s share price advance ever closer to that of MTN.<\/p>\n<p>Many analysts have had their reservations about Vodacom in the past, citing growth concerns under the watchful eye of its parent company, Vodafone.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st\">Vodacom\u2019s operations include networks in South Africa, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Nigeria and Lesotho. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>MTN, meanwhile, has been somewhat of a darling for investors given that it has operations in 22 countries in Africa and the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nigeria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, MTN group reported that its CEO, Sifiso Dabengwa, resigned as chief executive due to &#8216;prevailing circumstances occurring at MTN Nigeria&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>On the 26 October, it emerged that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) imposed a fine equivalent to US$5.2 billion on MTN Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>This fine relates to the timing of the disconnection of 5.1 million MTN Nigeria subscribers who were disconnected in August and September 2015 and is based on a fine of N200, 000 for each unregistered subscriber.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria is MTN&#8217;s largest operating unit, with more than 55 million customers, generating revenue of R54 billion at the end of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>In South Africa, MTN has just under 30 million customers, generating revenue of\u00a0R39 billion, while Vodacom has 33.7 million customers generating R62 billion annually.<\/p>\n<p>Group active customers increased 6.8% to 65.1 million, while total active customers reached 33.7 million in SA, with 1.6 million net customer additions in the first half there.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103541\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/MTN-vs-Vodacom-growth-graph.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103541\" class=\"wp-image-103541\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/MTN-vs-Vodacom-growth-graph.png\" alt=\"MTN vs Vodacom growth graph (Source: Google Finance)\" width=\"600\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/MTN-vs-Vodacom-growth-graph.png 1031w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/MTN-vs-Vodacom-growth-graph-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/MTN-vs-Vodacom-growth-graph-1024x533.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-103541\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MTN vs Vodacom growth YTD\u00a0(Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?chdnp=1&amp;chfdeh=0&amp;chdet=1447167600000&amp;chddm=103896&amp;cmpto=JSE:MTN;JSE:VOD&amp;cmptdms=0;0&amp;q=JSE:MTN,JSE:VOD&amp;ntsp=0&amp;ei=7qtBVuHCCcmXUJ6kkNgP\" target=\"_blank\">Google Finance<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Share price<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vodacom has seen its share price advance R23.20 or 18% over the past year, and by R60.70 or 67% over the past five years, to a near all-time best of R152.02 achieved in April.<\/p>\n<p>The group closed at R150.70 on Monday evening, with market cap of\u00a0 R224 billion.<\/p>\n<p>MTN saw its shares plummet to a low of R142.50 on 2 November, before recovering slightly by close of play on the JSE on Monday, to R160, after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-11-09\/mtn-said-in-advanced-talks-about-reduction-of-5-2-billion-fine\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported that the company was close to negotiating a heavily reduced fee.<\/p>\n<p>MTN has seen its share price fall by 30% &#8211; or R70 &#8211; over the past year, thanks mainly to its recent slump. Over a five year period, the company&#8217;s shares are up R24 or 18%.<\/p>\n<p>Forbes valued MTN Group as the 395th largest company in the world in a report in May 2015, with a value of $34.5 billion.
