{"id":103645,"date":"2015-11-11T09:35:22","date_gmt":"2015-11-11T07:35:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=103645"},"modified":"2015-11-11T09:35:22","modified_gmt":"2015-11-11T07:35:22","slug":"nearly-6000-water-related-jobs-at-sa-municipalities-are-unfilled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/103645\/nearly-6000-water-related-jobs-at-sa-municipalities-are-unfilled\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly 6,000 water related jobs at SA municipalities are unfilled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With South Africa in the grip of drought, new data published by StatsSA shows that\u00a0municipalities are struggling to fill funded posts in their water management departments.<\/p>\n<p>The role of local municipalities to provide clean water, maintain infrastructure, and reduce wastage has become more important than ever, StatsSA said.<\/p>\n<p>The current drought is expected to continue into the new year, and has lead the City of Johannesburg to implement level two water restrictions, on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Level two restrictions mean:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No watering and irrigating gardens between 06:00 and 18:00<\/li>\n<li>No filling of swimming pools<\/li>\n<li>No using of hose pipes to wash cars, paved areas, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Level three would entail supply of water at stipulated times a day, namely, only in the mornings and in the evenings at times to be announced, not unsimilar to electricity load shedding.<\/p>\n<p>Municipalities in Free State seem the least capable of filling water related posts, according to Stats SA\u2019s latest Non-financial census of municipalities report.<\/p>\n<p>The province recorded a vacancy rate of 24,4% in 2014. Of the 3,415 posts available in departments involved in water purification and water infrastructure, 833 were vacant.<\/p>\n<p>Eastern Cape municipalities, on the other hand, recorded the lowest provincial vacancy rate (9,9%), with 626 out of 6,294 posts left unfilled.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Water1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-103647\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Water1.jpg\" alt=\"Water1\" width=\"600\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Water1.jpg 1344w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Water1-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Water1-1024x671.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The vacancy rate nation-wide for water related posts was 13%: 43,998 posts were available, of which 5,723 were vacant.<\/p>\n<p>This rate was lower than the overall vacancy rate of 14,6% for all municipal posts, the study said.<\/p>\n<p>The map below shows where vacancy rates were the highest in water management departments.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/water2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-103649\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/water2.jpg\" alt=\"water2\" width=\"600\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/water2.jpg 1355w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/water2-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/water2-1024x606.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tokologo Local Municipality in Free State topped the list (70.8%) in 2014.
