Eskom has quietly extended the target dates for the Medupi and Kusile power stations to be fully operational, by a year.<\/p>\n

The dates were spotted by electricity expert Chris Yellend, who pointed out the new dates on presentation slides from Eskom.<\/p>\n

Medupi, which saw its first unit go online earlier this year, will now see its final unit go live only in May 2020 – a year after initially planned.<\/p>\n

Kusile, meanwhile, will suffer the same fate – it’s now expected to be fully live by September 2022. The first unit from Kusile is expected to go live in July 2018.<\/p>\n

\"Kusile\"<\/a>Medupi was initially planned to power up in 2011, before being delayed to 2013.<\/p>\n

The building of the power stations have faced numerous setbacks, from procurement, technical issues, labour problems, and even claims of corruption and maladministration.<\/p>\n

However, despite the delays, Eskom CEO Brian Molefe has expressed confidence in the current strength of South Africa’s power system, saying that the country should not see any load shedding until at least May 2016.<\/p>\n
