Vodacom is being\u00a0sued for $14 billion (R200 billion) in the Democratic Republic of Congo by Alieu Conteh, according to a report by\u00a0Bloomberg<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Alieu Conteh is the controlling shareholder of the company\u2019s minority partner in the country, who\u00a0claims\u00a0Vodacom\u2019s \u201cinternational unit helped to undermine the businessman\u2019s position as a statutory director of Congolese Wireless Network, which owns a 49 percent stake in Vodacom Congo\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cConteh\u2019s action in the Commercial Court of Kinshasa\/Gombe also seeks to overturn a court decision stripping him of his directorship,\u201d stated the report.<\/p>\n

\u201cVodacom International Limited is opposing Mr Conteh\u2019s claim, which we believe is unfounded and unsubstantiated,\u201d Vodacom\u2019s\u00a0Tshepo Ramodibe told Bloomberg.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur view is that Mr Conteh\u2019s action is primarily a challenge to the decision of the Commercial Court of Kinshasa\/Gombe which removed him as a co-manager of CWN.\u201d<\/p>\n

The legal action in the DRC follows competitor MTN\u2019s troubles in Nigeria, where it faces a possible $5.2-billion fine<\/a><\/strong> from the country\u2019s telecoms regulator.<\/p>\n
