{"id":10509,"date":"2012-04-20T16:09:09","date_gmt":"2012-04-20T14:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=10509"},"modified":"2012-04-23T10:31:57","modified_gmt":"2012-04-23T08:31:57","slug":"sa-adsl-price-cuts-isps-repond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/10509\/sa-adsl-price-cuts-isps-repond\/","title":{"rendered":"SA  ADSL price cuts: ISPs respond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the backdrop of recent wholesale <a title=\"ADSL - Asymmetric digital subscriber line\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2225-ADSL-Asymmetric-digital-subscriber-line\">ADSL<\/a> price cuts, South Africa&#8217;s ISPs have responded in kind by rolling out new products, pricing and data packages that filter down the saving and extra value to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>On the 30th of March, 2012, The <a title=\"Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2027-ICASA-Independent-Communications-Authority-of-SA\">Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) <\/a>announced that wholesale ADSL IPConnect (IPC) prices had to be dropped by 30% from 1 April 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The price cut was welcomed by ISPs as it offered more breathing room in terms of pricing, and also provided them with a chance to restructure and feed some of the saving down to their customers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MWEB price reduction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Mweb\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1817-Mweb\">MWEB<\/a> cut the price of its 1Mbps uncapped ADSL service from R299 per month to R199 per month, and is offered all of its 384kbps uncapped subscribers a free upgrade to 1Mbps accounts.<\/p>\n<p>MWEB ISP CEO, <a title=\"Derek Hershaw\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1818-Derek-Hershaw\">Derek Hershaw<\/a> said that it is in-line with their aim to make 1Mbps Uncapped ADSL the new entry-level uncapped product in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>MWEB Business also reduced the price of its business uncapped 1Mbps service from R986 per month to R799 per month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Axxess 10Mbps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Axxess\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2040-Axxess\">Axxess<\/a> has been the lastest ISP to cut its uncapped ADSL prices after the wholesale reduction, announcing a reduction in its 384 kbps and 1Mbps uncapped ADSL packages, as well as launching a 10Mbbps uncapped service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have just updated our uncapped pricing (on 384kbps and 1024kbps justUncapped) to pass on the new IPC savings from <a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1637-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a> to all our existing and new clients,\u201d Axxess marketing director, <a title=\"Franco Barbalich\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2226-Franco-Barbalich\">Franco Barbalich<\/a>, told MyBroadband.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cybersmart uncapped<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Cybersmart\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1953-Cybersmart\">Cybersmart<\/a> MD, <a title=\"Laurie Fialkov\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1955-Laurie-Fialkov\">Laurie Fialkov<\/a> said that the IPC price cut, as well as new hardware investments the company has made, made it possible for them to offer an uncapped ADSL product.<\/p>\n<p>Cybersmart is planning to launch its home uncapped product before 1 June, with its business uncapped ADSL service following towards the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Afrihost ADSL boost<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Afrihost\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1822-Afrihost\">Afrihost<\/a> chose to deliver the IPC price cut in a different way, by providing more data for the same price. The new data limits on capped accounts brought per-gig prices down to as little as R8.<\/p>\n<p>Afrihost said it would also be reviewing its regular and business uncapped prices. \u201cThough no official figures are available, [the prices] will at minimum match competitor rates,\u201d said Afrihost director, <a title=\"Greg Payne\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1823-Greg-Payne\">Greg Payne<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OpenWeb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Greg Payne\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1823-Greg-Payne\">Openweb<\/a> immediately reacted, cutting the price across their 1Mbps uncapped product range<\/p>\n<p>The ISP also announced it would be providing better value to ADSL users with new capped, unshaped ADSL data bundles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelkom have dropped their IPC charges. ISP\u2019s have been waiting for this drop for a long time. We thought the consumer should not wait any longer for cheaper rates,\u201d said <a title=\"Keoma Wright\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/301363-Keoma-Wright\">Keoma Wright<\/a>, Founder of OpenWeb.co.za.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FNB Connect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"FNB - First National Bank\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1730-FNB-First-National-Bank\">FNB&#8217;s<\/a> ISP arm responded to the cut by offering its banking clients additional free ADSL data &#8211; giving qualifying customers between 1GB and 5GB of free data a month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think that there\u2019s an opportunity to reward customers more through rewards programmes like eBucks or fuel rewards, and in some cases to disrupt other industries,\u201d said FNB&#8217;s CEO, <a title=\"Michael Jordaan\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/399571-Michael-Jordaan\">Michael Jordaan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our case, we thought the telco industry is one where we can bring significant free benefits to our customers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The rest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Web Africa\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1820-Web-Africa\">Web Africa\u2019s<\/a> COO, <a title=\"Rupert Bryant\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/302101-Rupert-Bryant\">Rupert Bryant<\/a> said that while they had just released their new Home ADSL packages from R7.99 per GB, their uncapped service would be next on the roadmap for review.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Vox Telecom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1952-Vox-Telecom\">Vox Telecom<\/a> and Telkom Internet are yet to announce any price shifts or reductions as a direct reaction to the price cut, however, Vox&#8217;s <a title=\"Clayton Timcke\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2227-Clayton-Timcke\">Clayton Timcke<\/a> said that the ISP &#8220;will definitely also challenge the status quo.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Telkom Internet has alluded that there isn&#8217;t any plan to cut prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelkom Internet is continuously reviewing its pricing but places a larger significance in offering value differentiation to its customers, both Business and Consumer.
