{"id":105615,"date":"2015-11-29T08:26:16","date_gmt":"2015-11-29T06:26:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=105615"},"modified":"2015-11-29T08:26:16","modified_gmt":"2015-11-29T06:26:16","slug":"prasa-wants-a-refund-for-its-r2-65-billion-train-blunder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/105615\/prasa-wants-a-refund-for-its-r2-65-billion-train-blunder\/","title":{"rendered":"Prasa wants a refund for its R2.65 billion train blunder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) wants to return the Afro 4000 trains which are unsuitable for local conditions, and get a refund for the R2.65 billion it has already paid for the order.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/sundaytimes\/stnews\/2015\/11\/29\/Take-back-your-trains-Prasa-seeks-refund-in-dodgy-tender-debacle\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Sunday Times reported that<\/strong><\/a> Prasa launched court action to \u201crecover from one of South Africa\u2019s biggest ever tender debacles involving billions of rands\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In July the Afro 4000 trains made headlines after Rapport revealed that the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/government\/131856-prasas-own-engineers-warned-that-the-afro-4000-locomotives-are-too-high.html\">locomotives were unsuitable for South African infrastructure<\/a><\/strong>, as the height of the trains is 4.264m, whereas the national limit was 3.965m.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/government\/136822-prasa-trains-hit-more-technical-problems-they-only-speak-spanish.html\"><strong>The problems with the Afro 4000 trains continued<\/strong><\/a> after one of the locomotives derailed.
