{"id":105621,"date":"2015-11-29T20:24:12","date_gmt":"2015-11-29T18:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=105621"},"modified":"2015-11-29T20:24:12","modified_gmt":"2015-11-29T18:24:12","slug":"why-the-anc-could-lose-gauteng","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/105621\/why-the-anc-could-lose-gauteng\/","title":{"rendered":"Why the ANC could lose Gauteng"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New data shows that public disapproval ratings for the ANC has increased significantly since 2011 under president Jacob Zuma, with particular concern in economic capital of Gauteng.<\/p>\n<p>The ANC admitted in August, in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anc.org.za\/docs\/umrabulo\/2015\/ngc_disc_docsy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">internal discussion document<\/a> that it has concerns about its waning support, following the general elections in May last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ANC\u2019s leadership status and role are under threat; and other political forces<br \/>\nseek to exploit its weaknesses to dislodge it,\u201d the document said.<\/p>\n<p>From the last two national elections, the ANC has shed support, coming down from 69.7% in 2004, to 65.9% in 2009 and 62.2% in 2014, it said.<\/p>\n<p>ANC membership has also dwindled from over one million\u00a0to just above 789,000 over the last couple of years, president Jacob Zuma said at the party&#8217;s national general council (NGC) last month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/89244\/these-are-the-places-to-watch-in-the-2016-elections-in-sa\/\" target=\"_blank\">These are the places to watch in the 2016 elections in SA<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to a survey published by international research firm <a href=\"http:\/\/afrobarometer.org\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/Dispatches\/ab_r6_dispatchno65_south_africa_leadership_performance_24112015.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Afrobarometer<\/a>, approval of president Zuma has almost halved between 2011 (64%) and 2015 (36%) and is now well below the presidential\u00a0 average since 2000 (55%).<\/p>\n<p>The Afrobarometer team in South Africa, led by the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) and Plus 94 Research, interviewed 2,400 adult South Africans in August-September 2015.<\/p>\n<p>In Gauteng, the approval rating for president Zuma has dropped to 23% &#8211; Joint last out of nine provinces, and 36% for members of parliament in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>However, approval for the premier in Gauteng is at 52% &#8211; fifth highest, while for Local government councillors, its at 31% &#8211; third worst.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling party\u2019s popularity in the City of Joburg waned substantially in the 2014 elections, down more than 10% from 2009, to 52.3%, from 62.35% in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2011 local elections it won 58.56%.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Approval-of-elected-leaders.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-105065\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Approval-of-elected-leaders.png\" alt=\"Approval of elected leaders\" width=\"600\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Approval-of-elected-leaders.png 884w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Approval-of-elected-leaders-300x185.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Among black South Africans, 42% approve in the leadership of president Zuma, 47% in members of parliament, and only 38% in local government.<\/p>\n<p>ANC supporters&#8217; faith in govenment is slipping, with 53% approving of the president, 54% in members of parliament, and only 44% in local council.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Public-disapproval-by-race.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-105061\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Public-disapproval-by-race.png\" alt=\"Public disapproval by race\" width=\"600\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Public-disapproval-by-race.png 920w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Public-disapproval-by-race-300x193.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Approval is particularly low among younger South Africans, at 34% for Zuma among those 18-29 and older, and 36% for those between 30-49 year old.
