{"id":106599,"date":"2015-12-09T09:13:32","date_gmt":"2015-12-09T07:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=106599"},"modified":"2015-12-09T09:13:32","modified_gmt":"2015-12-09T07:13:32","slug":"licence-demerit-system-may-launch-in-2016-heres-what-you-need-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/106599\/licence-demerit-system-may-launch-in-2016-heres-what-you-need-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Licence demerit system may launch in 2016 &#8211; here&#8217;s what you need to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s driver demerit system will be launched in April 2016, according to a report by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wheels24.co.za\/News\/sa-demerit-system-all-you-need-to-know-20151204\" target=\"_blank\">Wheels24<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the system was\u00a0signed into law in September 1998 as part of the AARTO Act.<\/p>\n<p>The system, which is based on ones used in Australia and the UK, has been delayed since then due to \u201ca feasibility study, an assessment of technological requirements, and an\u00a0analysis of human resources\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The demerit system will penalise\u00a0South African drivers who break the law, which could result in their driver\u2019s licence being suspended or revoked.<\/p>\n<p>The AARTO\u00a0system will be managed by the Road Traffic Infringement Agency. It will oversee the demerit system \u2013 which\u00a0works as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A driver\u00a0starts with zero points.<\/li>\n<li>Demerit points are allocated according to offences committed.<\/li>\n<li>Points are allocated on the date a fine is paid or when the person is convicted of the offence.<\/li>\n<li>Operators receive points separately from their drivers.<\/li>\n<li>When you reach 13 points or more, your\u00a0licence is suspended with effect from 32 days after the maximum points were reached.<\/li>\n<li>The suspension period is calculated in months equal to the number of points exceeding 12, multiplied by three.<\/li>\n<li>The driver may apply for the return of the licence\u00a0after the suspension.<\/li>\n<li>A driver who is disqualified three times will lose their licence and will have to take their driver\u2019s test again.<\/li>\n<li>Demerit points will be reduced at a rate of one point per every three months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Demerit system \u2013 points allocation<\/h3>\n<p>The table below details how many points a driver will lose per offence, as per the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rtia.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">Road
