However, much has changed since then, with <a href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/102349\/inside-the-clifton-home-that-just-sold-for-r111-million\/\" target=\"_blank\">homes in some Cape Town subur<\/a>bs selling for hundreds of millions of rands.<\/p>\n<p>The original Monopoly board focused on four of South Africa\u2019s biggest cities at the time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Johannesburg<\/li>\n<li>Cape Town<\/li>\n<li>Bloemfontein<\/li>\n<li>Durban<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most expensive real estate available to purchase was Eloff Street which you could snap up for R400.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Eloff.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-107409\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-107409\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Eloff.jpg\" alt=\"Eloff\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Eloff.jpg 400w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Eloff-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Eloff-320x240.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cape Town properties were in second place, with Long, Plein and Parliament streets as the prime pickings in the city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1963 version<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Durban\u00a0&#8211; Musgrave\u00a0and\u00a0Gillespie\u00a0(brown), Durban station, Smith,\u00a0West and Marine Parade (blue)<\/li>\n<li>Bloemfontein &#8211; Monument,\u00a0Aliwal,\u00a0Maitland (purple), Bloemfontein station, President Brand,\u00a0Hofmeyer,\u00a0Voortrekker (orange)<\/li>\n<li>Cape Town &#8211; Groote Schuur,\u00a0Strand,\u00a0Roeland (red), Cape Town station, Plein,\u00a0Parliament,\u00a0Long (yellow)<\/li>\n<li>Johannesburg &#8211; Main, Joubert,\u00a0De Villiers (green), Johannesburg station, Jan Smuts,\u00a0Eloff (dark purple)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2002 version<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 2002 edition of the South African Monopoly board underwent a serious makeover, where much of the traditional SA properties were swapped in favour of more exclusive real estate.<\/p>\n<p>Streets in Durban, Bloemfontein, Cape Town, and Johannesburg were replaced with cities, neighbourhoods and landmarks.<\/p>\n<p>Eloff street in Johannesburg (which, while it had become a less \u201cdesirable\u201d property investment option, was still one of the more expensive streets in JHB), West and Smith streets in Durban and Long and Strand streets in Cape Town, no longer featured on the 2002 board.<\/p>\n<p>These spots were replaced by Plettenberg Bay, Franschhoek, Hyde Park and Sandton. Boksburg, Mitchells Plain and Soweto also featured on the board.<\/p>\n<p>Snapping up property in Clifton, the prime property suburb on the board, would set you back R40,000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking at 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, however, in terms of property value, the landscape has changed with Cape Town leading the way, followed by Johannesburg, Pretoria, and then Durban.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An investment in Musgrave Road would\u2019ve been an excellent one as it is by far the most expensive street in Durban from the original board, and is now nearly four times as valuable as Gillespie,&#8221; Lightstone Property said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-107407\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/monopoly.png\" alt=\"monopoly\" width=\"600\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/monopoly.png 772w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/monopoly-300x171.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/monopoly-768x437.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a02015, Clifton is still the suburb with the highest property values in SA.
