MTN says its operation in Ghana, Scancom\u00a0 Limited, has won an auction process for a 15 year 4G\/LTE licence in the 800 MHz spectrum band.<\/p>\n
The mobile operator paid US$67.5 million.<\/p>\n
The National Communications Authority of Ghana will award the licence and spectrum to MTN Ghana once the licence fee has been paid.<\/p>\n
MTN Ghana surpassed 15 million subscribers at the end of the third quarter of 2015.<\/p>\n
Data revenue increased 78.6% year-on-year for the nine months period ended\u00a0 30\u00a0 September 2015 and contributed 28.7% to total\u00a0 revenue.\u00a0 For the same period
\nthe operation had approximately 3 million smartphones on its network.<\/p>\n
Previously, MTN\u00a0 Ghana was only able to provide 2G and 3G services (voice\u00a0 and\u00a0 data)\u00a0 to\u00a0 its customers using 900Mhz, 1800Mhz and 2100Mhz spectrum.<\/p>\n
As part of the eligibility criteria of the licence and spectrum, MTN Ghana
\nis required to have a minimum of 35% Ghanaian ownership in place within 13 months from the effective date of the licence.<\/p>\n
