Everyone from business leaders to high-ups in the ANC moved against president Jacob Zuma to reverse the damage done by his axing of former finance minister, Nhlanhla Nene.<\/p>\n
This is according to a report by the Sunday Times, saying that the president had lost control of the party after his controversial decision lead to a market crash in the country.<\/p>\n
Zuma made the decision to axe Nene and replaced him with unknown ANC back-seater David van Rooyen, sending the rand into free-fall, resulting in billions of rands in losses.<\/p>\n
Three days after the decision, Zuma did a U-turn and reappointed former finance minister Pravin Gordhan to the position – but the damage had been done.<\/p>\n
According to the Sunday Times, Zuma’s colleagues at Luthuli House took charge of the matter, while top members of Cosatu and the SACP turned on him.<\/p>\n
Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa reportedly distanced himself from the matter, telling his staff he had no part of Nene’s removal.<\/p>\n
After explaining the dire consequences for the country’s economy, the political groups and business leaders reportedly gave the president two options: re-hire Nene, or appoint Gordhan.<\/p>\n
Failing that, South Africa would have been left with a crashing market like Brazil – and the president and the ANC would have been left facing the consequences alone.<\/p>\n
