{"id":108393,"date":"2016-01-08T16:34:44","date_gmt":"2016-01-08T14:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=108393"},"modified":"2016-01-08T16:55:24","modified_gmt":"2016-01-08T14:55:24","slug":"reverse-racism-doesnt-exist-human-rights-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/108393\/reverse-racism-doesnt-exist-human-rights-commission\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Reverse racism&#8217; doesn&#8217;t exist: Human Rights Commission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) said it does not recognise the concept of &#8216;reverse racism&#8217;.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">South Africa has seen a number of nasty racism incidents over the past week which have led to much outrage, particularly on social media sites Twitter and Facebook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> Many of the perceived incidents of racism have led to citizens questioning the definition of the word.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Racism, racial discrimination, and hate speech are wrong and unlawful regardless of perpetrator&#8217;s colour &#8211; be it white or black. Report it to the SAHRC,&#8221; said advocate Thuli Madonsela, the Public Protector of South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nobody is born racist. Like all bigotry, racism is learned through socialization and can be unlearned.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Events in last few days have awakened us to the fact that we can&#8217;t continue to turn a blind eye to the festering culture of public insults,&#8221; said Madonsela.<\/p>\n<p>BusinessTech put the question of racism to the <span lang=\"EN-GB\">SAHRC, a state institution established to support constitutional democracy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The SAHRC is mandated to protect and assess the observance of human rights in South Africa and was established to <\/span>investigate prima facie violations of human rights as contained within the Bill of Rights &#8211; which is Chapter Two of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We do not recognise the concept of &#8216;reverse racism&#8217; as that would presuppose that there are different kinds or categories of racism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Racism is racism, irrespective of the colour of the victim or perpetrator. If a black person only leases his\/her rental apartments to other black persons, such a person would be guilty of racism.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Oxford Dictionary defines racism as: Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one\u2019s own race is superior.<\/p>\n<p>The Free dictionary by Farlex <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/Reverse+racism\" target=\"_blank\">describes<\/a><\/strong> &#8216;reverse discrimination&#8217; as: Discrimination against members of a dominant or majority group, especially when resulting from policies established to correct discrimination against members of a minority or disadvantaged group.<\/p>\n<p>Anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko said the following in an expert from his book\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.za\/books?id=Aq5PJWaSTzUC&amp;pg=PA25&amp;lpg=PA25&amp;dq=steve+Biko+%22blacks+can%27t+be+racist+Those+who+know,+define+racism+as+discrimination+by+a+group+against+another+for+the+purposes+of+subjugation+or+maintaining+subjugation.+In+other+words+one+cannot+be+a+racist+unless+he+has+the+power+to+subjugate.&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=4lPTbwUB_B&amp;sig=qBRQilrdTodV0Ustgiz2A0HtZ-M&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiDvbf1r5rKAhVD0h4KHVFQD1kQ6AEILDAD#v=onepage&amp;q=steve%20Biko%20%22blacks%20can%27t%20be%20racist%20Those%20who%20know%2C%20define%20racism%20as%20discrimination%20by%20a%20group%20against%20another%20for%20the%20purposes%20of%20subjugation%20or%20maintaining%20subjugation.%20In%20other%20words%20one%20cannot%20be%20a%20racist%20unless%20he%20has%20the%20power%20to%20subjugate.&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">I write what I like<\/a><\/strong>: &#8220;Those who know, define racism as discrimination by a group against another for the purposes of subjugation or maintaining subjugation.
